"Communicate Effectively"?? Dubya-Tee-Eff Mate!?

It seems as if the main purpose of public higher education these days is to teach kids how to be.

They believe that giving us a bazillion “group work” assignments is going to make us better people when we go out into the world and become the worker-bees they want us all to be.

One of the oh-so-important issues they want to decide for us is how we communicate. They are supposed to be educating us on how to be better communicators.

The problem is, the worst communication skills that I've ever seen have been from teachers. In general, the documentation and scheduling that teachers provide (at my school, UW Bothell, at least) is about the most disorganized and convoluted pile of hoopety-joop you've ever seen!

Basically, they suck at making things clear. They hide details of assignments in difficult-to-find documents, which are located on difficult-to-find web sites, which are constructed by design-deficient union workers.

“Nate! Stop moaning. You made the choice to go to college, so deal with it!”

You're right, I did. And I stick by my decision. I'm not going to college because I want to learn the institution's gobbeldy-gook of useless computer science theory. I'm not going to college because I need the degree. In fact, I don't think many teachers there have as much real-world experience as my 20-year-old hot body does.

I'm going there because I need to learn discipline. It'd be nice if they could teach me something useful while I'm at it and not confuse me in the process.
